My plane survival kit: 10 things I never travel without!

Summer time is travel time, so it’s only right that I list my favorite travel “gadgets”! I have been extremely privileged in my life to travel since I was a baby. At that time my family still used to travel with huge metal travel crates rather than suitcases, and my sister and me were allowed to sleep on the cabin floor - also smoking was still allowed, which I am glad is no longer the norm on most airlines. Traveling is one of the best, most eye opening things you can do for yourself, so it is hardly fair to complain about air travel. However, whether you travel for work or pleasure, plane flights can cause undue stress on your body: think stress from delayed flights and connections, that

Healthy food spotting: Hong Kong

On my recent trip to Hong Kong, I was lucky enough to stay directly opposite the little raw juicery Mana! on Wellington Street in Central. This meant plenty of healthy fuel to keep me going in the summer heat of Hong Kong. Mana! has two locations very close to each other. The first one is a slow cooking cafe just up the road. The long lines out the door at every hour of the day meant that I was not able to try this! :-( I will make it my top priority on my next trip to Hong Kong, since I am eager to try some of their delicious sounding flatbread wraps and salad boxes. The second location was the Mana! Raw cafe, which I went to visit several times each day. They have a menu of signature juice

Shanghai, I am staying!

After a lot of back and forth, we have decided to stay in Shanghai until next year. Which means more one-on-one work is available with me in both nutrition and personal training. Contact me if you want to work with me. And no, sadly Alive Shanghai will not be coming back. But do keep your eyes open here on the blog for special community fitness classes coming soon! Alternatively, sign up for my weekly newsletter to stay in the loop. Looking forward to catching up with you! #aboutme

Raw cauliflower tabbouleh - raw foods part 1

When looking at shelves in the cooking section of book stores, you will see the trend of raw foods taking off. More and more nutrition conscious people are jumping on the bandwagon. Why? Is it just another diet trend or does it really provide health benefits? Over the next few weeks I’ll be showcasing some of my favorite raw food recipes and explain in more detail what it is, what it does, and how you can use it for the healthiest you. Today, let’s start with what raw food is. A raw food diet consists primarily of fruit, vegetables, nuts, seeds, sprouted grains and beans, all of which have not been heated over 48ºC/118ºF. When eating a raw food diet, we are eating pure and clean. We are retu

Hydrate in style: flavored waters

It is getting hotter, and hydrating properly should be your top priority at the moment. When you feel thirsty, it's already too late! Your body will be dehydrated, and starting to show all sorts of symptoms: headaches, dry and itchy skin, bloating, low energy levels, and fatigue. The hotter and more humid it is outside, the more you will need to drink to make up for the amount of water you are losing through sweat. On top of that, factor in how active your lifestyle is: do you exercise every day, walk around a lot or sit in an air conditioned office for hours? The more you move, the more water you need. Once you start to drink more water, you will also feel more thirsty. Your body is excited

Dreamy avocado chocolate mousse

This creamy, dairy free, white sugar free version of a chocolate mousse can be found on pretty much every health oriented blog these days. So this is my version, that I have been swearing by for years. It’s so easy to make, so deliciously chocolatey, and totally impresses anyone you serve this to. Actually, most of the time I just make an entire batch for myself to eat in front of the TV. There is my little secret for you! I hope you enjoy it as much as I do. Preparation time: 5 minutes For 4 servings: 2 ripe, soft avocados ½ cup + 2 Tbsp raw cacao powder ½ cup maple syrup (or other liquid sweetener of your choice) ½ cup water 2 Tbsp vanilla extract 1 tsp freshly squeezed lemon juice pinch o

Could meditating be right for you?

Yes it looks hippie, it sounds hippie, but here is why I think you should give mediating a try! There is no debating that we are all stressed - all the time! When you ask people how they are doing, you usually hear about how busy their lives are. And this never stops. Even going to an exercise class, which should be time off from your busy day, turns into a stressful event, because you just have to go and tick it off your list. Most people are even stressed during their sleep, thinking of all the things that need to get done. There is no time to breathe, rest, and recover. This is where meditating comes in! It’s a time to just reconnect to your breath, to yourself, and to nothing at all. It’
