Weight loss is the number one goal for most people when it comes to New Year’s resolutions. Some set a real, others just vaguely state they would like to be smaller. January 1st comes and you are absolutely motivated to make this the year of successful weight loss. Gyms sell more memberships in January than the rest of the months in the year combined! Diet books top bestseller lists around the world, and articles on how to reach your goals can be found everywhere online.
This is the time of the year when I think of Bridget Jones and the scene where she is spinning like a maniac, only to stumble off the bike, and fall not so gracefully down on the floor. For some reason, this is one of the most hilarious scenes of weight loss efforts burnt into my brain.
Rather than working out and dieting to an extreme in order to reach your goal, and then to start piling on the pounds again, why not make the “simple” resolution of taking better care of yourself? Listen to what your body needs rather than trying to run after an ideal that the media, your social circle or other outside influences put on you. I have worked with countless people who are doing everything right from an exercise and food perspective, yet they are not seeing the weight loss results they want. This is because they are depriving themselves of important self love.
Self love can be a hot cup of tea on a cold winter afternoon. A stroll in the park when the sun comes out. An unexpected gift of time to just sit and be with your own thoughts for 5 minutes. Going to bed early to get a full night’s rest.
Self love is not always possible on all levels on a daily basis - life, work, kids, partners, friends all take time away from yourself. However, I do believe everyone has 5 minutes a day to take care of themselves in an unexpected way. Look out here on the blog for more tips on self love in the coming months.
