Acai bowls two ways

If you follow any kind of Instagram foodie account these days, you will see that acai bowls have taken the world by storm over the last couple of years. They are everywhere, and for good reasons. Acai is hailed as a superfood with a good dose of healthy omega fats, rich in minerals and vitamins, and naturally sugar free. It's actually a berry , which is a little smaller than a grape. It combines the tartness of a cranberry, and the juiciness of a raspberry, but less sweet. The berry has a skin and pulp, which get processed into an acai berry puree or dried into acai berry powder. The majority of the acai berry is actually a big seed (it takes up about 70% of the berry), meaning getting acai puree it very labor intensive! Acai berries are grown in the Amazon, and if you buy Sambazon's acai berry products, you can be sure that the Amazon forest is being protected through their work with local farmers to farm sustainably. What better way to do feel food about the food you eat than also doing good in the world?

Now when it comes to acai bowls, the majority of recipes you can find online and how they are made in acai bowl cafes, is by blending acai puree with other berries and fruit to get a soft, ice cream like texture. This is then topped with all kinds of shredded nuts, dried berries, seeds, and superfoods you have stashed somewhere in your pantry. There is a long list below to check out what I use to top my bowls.

But here is the big but: if you live outside of Brazil or the US, it is pretty much impossible to find these frozen packets. So worry not! You can still make a delicious acai bowl using acai powder, which you can find on Amazon and bring back from trips home. Since the powder is very strong tasting, a little will last you a long time. Make sure you combine this acai powder with frozen bananas to get the same creaminess a regular acai bowl will have. I promise you, this will taste so good, you will eat it for your healthy dessert every night this summer. What I absolute love about acai bowls is even though they are made just with fruit, they are super filling. It's because of the healthy fat content in acai berry unlike any other fruit. You will not go hungry mid morning if you have this bowl for breakfast. Give it a try!
