Hydrate in style: flavored waters

It is getting hotter, and hydrating properly should be your top priority at the moment. When you feel thirsty, it's already too late! Your body will be dehydrated, and starting to show all sorts of symptoms: headaches, dry and itchy skin, bloating, low energy levels, and fatigue. The hotter and more humid it is outside, the more you will need to drink to make up for the amount of water you are losing through sweat. On top of that, factor in how active your lifestyle is: do you exercise every day, walk around a lot or sit in an air conditioned office for hours? The more you move, the more water you need.

Once you start to drink more water, you will also feel more thirsty. Your body is excited that it is suddenly getting proper hydration and wants more of it. So make it your mission to carry around a bottle of water with you everywhere you go and sip continuously. Yes, this means you will have to visit the bathroom more frequently - there is no way around that, just get used to it!

I know that a lot if people struggle with drinking normal water. They want coffee, tea, juices, and sodas instead. Nothing will give you the same kind of hydration as real natural water filled with minerals. Make your water more exciting by flavoring it with fruit, veggies, and herbs.

Here are my top 3 flavor combinations I love to sip on all summer long. The rule is: fill about ⅓ of your pitcher with the fruit, veggies, and herbs, then top with water. Don’t worry too much about the quantities of each ingredient, feel free to play around with it and be creative!

Pink Vitamin Water

  • 1 cup frozen raspberries

  • ½ lemon, juiced

Green Flush

  • 20 mint leaves

  • 10 slices cucumber

  • 1 lime, thinly sliced

  • ½ green apple, thinly sliced

Tropical Sip

  • 10 kaffir lime leaves, take out the middle hard core by slicing the halves off

  • 1 peach, chopped into small pieces

  • ½ orange, thinly sliced

Combine in a pitcher and add 1.5 - 2 liters of water. Let sit for at least 30 minutes for the water to color slightly and take on the flavors. Best served chilled!

Happy sipping!
