Halloween is just around the corner, so here is a little round up of my favorite healthy Halloween treats. I have served these over the years at our annual Halloween parties, as well as special Halloween fitness classes. Halloween doesn’t mean you have to throw all your healthy resolutions over board. Give these a try!
Crooked apple teeth
You can keep the almond slices raw or toast them slightly to make them look more browned and ugly :-)
Preparation time: 5 minutes
Quarter your apple, cut out the stem part, and then cut it into 4 equal slices.
Spread a tiny bit of almond butter on each slice, then place the almond slices in between to make the crooked teeth.
Spooky mandarin oranges
Fall is definitely mandarin season, and they make adorable little natural candies. I handed them out last year, and all the kids fell in love with the cute faces I drew on the mandarins. Only one child started crying because there was no real candy haha.
Preparation time: 5 minutes
Be creative and make each face a little individual. I had too much fun with this!
Raw chocolate coconut cups
A twist on peanut butter chocolate cups! These raw chocolate cups come together quickly, and they are actually not real raw chocolate. Instead of using cacao butter, and making a mess of your kitchen while you try to melt it in a warm water bath, I use coconut oil instead. You whip this with raw cacao powder, place it in the fridge to harden, and voila!
Preparation time: 15 minutes
Total cooling time: 1 hour
Makes 6 cups:
For the chocolate:
⅓ cup + 1 Tbsp virgin coconut oil
⅓ cup raw honey (or other liquid sweetener of your choice)
2 Tbsp raw cacao powder
For the filling:
2 Tbsp desiccated coconut
1.5 Tbsp raw honey (or other liquid sweetener of your choice)
½ tsp vanilla extract
6 mini cupcake cups
Either whisk the ingredients for the chocolate by hand or place in food processor and process on high for 1 minute. It should resemble smooth chocolate sauce.
Fill each cupcake cup with ½ Tbsp chocolate sauce to cover the bottom of the cup. Place in fridge for 5-10 minute to harden slightly. Keep the rest of the chocolate sauce on the side.
In the meantime, mix together the filling ingredients.
Take the chocolate cups out of the fridge, and place about ½ teaspoon of filling into each cup, pat it down to make it as flat as possible. Top with 1 tablespoon of chocolate sauce, so all the filling is completely covered.
Place the cups back in the fridge for 45 minutes or longer to harden completely.
This is definitely my favorite Halloween snack. So easy to make and it will be a hit at your Halloween party - everyone will stand around it and think what a genius you are :-).
Most people have their own guacamole recipe, this is my version. You will probably need to double this recipe to make the puking pumpkin very impressive.
To keep guacamole from going brown, everyone has their own little trick. For me, the added lime juice and onion work well enough to keep the guacamole from going brown. You can also add the avocado pits to the guacamole to keep it green longer.
Preparation time: 10 minutes
Makes 4 servings:
1 tomato, finely chopped
½ white onion, finely chopped
4 Tbsp lime juice
bunch of coriander/ cilantro leaves, finely chopped
tsp garlic powder (optional)
sea salt and black pepper
Mash the avocado with the lime juice, garlic powder and a pinch of sea salt and black pepper (or place everything in the food processor to whip smooth).
Add the finely chopped tomato, onion, and coriander leaves to the mashed avocado. Taste and adjust seasoning with lime juice, garlic powder, sea salt, and black pepper.
