Keeping your digestion happy during the holidays

While I love the holidays and all the delicious foods that come with it, I do not enjoy how those foods make me feel: tired, sluggish, exhausted, lethargic, and just down. This is the typical food coma most of us fall into after indulging a bit too much. But where does all your energy go? To your digestion! It is working overtime right now, trying to digest foods you usually wouldn't eat, working through the quantities you are consuming at the moment, and making sure you are eliminating all the “harmful” waste. Your digestion becomes tired and sluggish, and this shows up immediately in how you feel. Keeping my digestion happy during the holidays is always my number one priority, so I feel excited, happy, and energetic the whole time. Here are my go-to remedies to keeping my digestion happy:

Green smoothies

It’s no secret that I am a huge fan of green smoothies - using fruit in combination with leafy greens for extra energy and a smooth digestion. Now is the time to make sure you get your daily dose! I start every morning with a green smoothie, sometimes even keeping some extra for an afternoon snack. You can find plenty of green smoothie ideas here on the blog!

Psyllium husk

Psyllium husk is pure fiber, and can sometimes be found in healthy recipes to bind dough. When you mix psyllium husk with water, you get a thick mixture that you have to drink quickly. If you leave it for too long, it expands and becomes even thicker. You want that thickening to happen in your intestines instead. That way, the psyllium husk works like a brush to clean through the pipes. It really works miracles. It’s not pleasant to drink, but just get it down quickly. I have a glass of this every morning before breakfast and every evening before bedtime.

Udo's oil

You may have not heard of this oil before, a blend of essential fats to keep your skin smooth, your brain sharp, your digestion flowing, and your arteries clean. I use this oil on a very regular basis, but make sure to double my dose during the holidays. Don’t stress about the fat content. This is the kind of fat that doesn’t make you fat. Instead, it gets used in the body right away to make you glow from the inside out. Once you had your shot of psyllium husk, drink the Udo’s oil. The psyllium husk brushes through your intestines, the oil then helps to wash away any tougher garbage that is stuck. Again, I have this every morning and evening together with the psyllium husk. Yes, it’s not pleasant to drink, I won’t lie to you. But just quickly get it down and drink some water after. You will survive, and you will feel so much better!

Water, water, water

The final remedy to keep your digestion flowing is to drink plenty of water. Even when you think you’ve had enough, drink some more! The regular suggestion of 8 glasses of water is definitely not enough here. Have a bottle of water with you everywhere you go, and guzzle that water all day long. Nothing in your digestion flows without water, in fact constipation is a sign of dehydration. You won’t feel your sparkly self when your are constipated and gassy, so drink, drink, drink.

I hope you feel happy and light this holiday season!

P.S.: I also use these tricks when I travel! Try it out the next time you are in a foreign place with foods you usually wouldn't eat. I promise you, you will feel so much better.
