Healthy food spotting: Washington D.C.

When I travel and find an organic cafe with creative, nourishing smoothies, and plant based foods, it's like hitting the jackpot! On a recent trip to Washington D.C. I struck gold yet again. Baby Zand and I explored the city by foot for 2 weeks, and came across Fruitive tucked into a high end shopping area.

As you walk in, the ambiance is pure calm and serenity. Wooden shelves line the walls with plant based cookbooks (hello Kris Carr!), flat screens show the delicious menu, and infused water is ready for anyone who wants to hydrate upon entry. We went back several times, mainly for filling smoothies for Baby Zand's snack time.

Baby Zand's top 3 smoothie picks:

  1. 'Turmerango' with cashew milk, turmeric, vanilla, orange, banana, mango, and carrots

  2. 'Coconut Colada' with extra spinach

  3. 'Iron Berry' with cashew milk, blueberries, strawberries avocado, dates, pitaya, spinach, kale and vanilla

The ingredient lists seem endless, but the smoothies are really well thought through to be nutritionally balanced AND delicious.

On top of smoothies there are also juice cleanses available for 1, 3 or 5 days. The rest of the menu is very breakfast oriented with smoothie bowls, sweet toasts made with flax spelt bread, buckwheat waffles, and grain bowls.

For more savory options, the salads are filling and perfect as a whole meal with quinoa, beans, and rice. Wraps and tacos with collard greens were our favorite, and we tried all of them! For a more traditional lunch you can also find whole wheat wraps and sandwiches on the menu.

My top 3 dishes:

  1. The Southwest Salad with wild rice, bean and corn salsa, avocado, spicy hummus and a ranch dressing

  2. The Original Collard wrap with rice, edamame, carrots, apples, raisins, hummus, and carrot ginger dressing

  3. The Banana Nut Supergrain Bowl with brazil nut milk, oats, quinoa, chia seeds, flax seeds, maple syrup, banana, raisins, pecan nuts, and cinnamon

While Fruitive describes itself as an organic fast causal restaurant, it's kind of like a takeaway place with quite a long wait. You can tell smoothies are freshly blended, salads are not prepared ahead of time in containers, and wraps need stuffing and rolling. This makes for very fresh food, which I really appreciate. Just know that if a few people are ahead of you, you can easily end up waiting 15 minutes for your food. There are a handful of tables to sit at in case you want to enjoy your fresh meal right here. The downside with most of these amazing places is of course the price. You can't compare this to a quick and cheap McDonalds! With a salad and a smoothie you easily end up spending $25. But the high you get from such a nutritious meal is absolutely worth it!
