Let me start right away with saying, this juice shot is not for the faint hearted! If you like your juice on the sweet side with a few green leaves thrown in for antioxidants, then this will be a huge jump for you. If you are keen on throwing anything in your juicer, then give this is a try! It's super spicy, slightly bitter, but also fruity, and kind of like a wake up call perfect first thing in the morning.
Thai basil leaves are pointier than your regular Italian basil, often almost purple in color, and more bitter and strong. I love rotating my leafy greens for juices and smoothies, to vary the nutrients, and make sure I eat seasonally. Thai basil is a wonderful addition to your rotation if you are only used to the more common Italian and Holy basil.
Galangal root is very similar to ginger, and often used in Thai cooking. In Thai recipes I use ginger in case I can't find galangal, and you can do that here, too. Galangal is more bitter than ginger, and really helps to kickstart your digestion in the morning.
The grapefruit early in the morning is super cleansing and hydrating. And the lime gets thrown in for an extra refreshing boost.
Preparation time: 10 minutes (plus the time it takes to clean your juicer afterwards!!! The job I hate the most :-()
Makes 2 shots:
- 1 grapefruit, peeled (or if you can find organic, keep the peel on and throw the whole thing in the juicer!)
- 1 pinky sized piece of galangal root
- 1 lime (again, if you can find organic, leave the peel on!)
- ¼ cup Thai basil leaves
Run everything through the juicer and done! This makes 2 shots, so enjoy with someone you love.
