Mango orange green smoothie

The first recipe of #selflovejanuary clearly has to be one I write most about: a green smoothie. I am obsessed with leafy greens for a good reason. The majority of people could handle their energy problems simply by adding leafy greens to every meal. This does not mean boring, limp lettuce leaves, but exciting green leaves in stews, veggie bowls, crunchy salads or in green smoothies. Leafy greens grow towards the sun, which means they accumulate the sun energy and make it available to us, even in the deep winter we are in right now. How exciting is that?! You can actually feel like you just sun bathed by eating leafy greens!

Most of us don't get enough leafy greens, so blending them into a smoothie is ideal. You get a big load of leafy greens easy to devour and easy to digest. If you have never had a green smoothie before, then hello beautiful, and welcome to a life changing practice. The way I feel with a green smoothie is kind of like being on crack (well since I've never tried crack, this is what I imagine it to feel like :-)). The second I take my first green smoothie sip in the morning is when I wake up, and feel fueled and ready to take on the day. On rare occasions when I am traveling, and I do not get my green smoothie, my whole body feels it. It's tired, sluggish, and my digestion just stagnates. I started introducing green smoothies over 10 years ago, and it has truly changed my energy level, my skin, and my digestion. What more could you ask for from a humble glass of juice?!? Give this green smoothie a try, and I promise it will be life changing for you.

A quick note on this specific green smoothie. Adding oranges to your green smoothie is delicious and a real vitamin kick. However, oranges turn very bitter in your green smoothie if you let it stand around for too long. So make sure to drink this batch right away. This recipe is a simple one. No frills, no special powders, and no hard-to-find ingredients required. Simple, healthy foods!

Preparation time: 5 minutes

Makes 1 serving:

  • 1 orange

  • 1/2 cup chopped mango

  • 2 cups spinach (start with 1 1/2 cups if this is your first green smoothie)

  • 1 cup cold water

  1. Peel the orange by slicing off the top and bottom of the orange. Then place it on the smooth, cut edge, and run your knife down the sides along the peel. Try to get as much of the white hairy flesh off as possible, as this is what turns your smoothie bitter.

  2. Then add the orange and all other ingredients to the blender, and blend for 1 minute until smooth and creamy.

  3. Enjoy right away.
