Homemade spice mixes

The next gift idea is here: homemade spice mixes. They are unique, delicious, super useful to anyone who wants to throw something together in the kitchen. You can give them all at once or just make one that you enjoy the most. Also feel free to stock your own pantry with them :-)

I like to use Ikea spice jars for gifts like this, but you can fill them into little bags or other small jars, too. Be creative, add a cute label, and maybe even a little wooden spoon.

Mulling spice

Add this to a cup of red wine or apple juice and heat gently to infuse with the beautiful taste of Christmas. It's so good!!! You can also make the poached pears and buckwheat breakfast bowl from the Warming Breakfasts ebook with this.

Preparation time: 5 minutes

Makes 1 jar:

  • 12 cloves

  • 6 cinnamon sticks

  • 4 cardamom

  • 2 star anise

  • 1/4 cup dried orange zest

Place everything into a food processor or coffee grinder, and grind for a few seconds until slightly broken down. Fill into airtight jar(s), and keep for up to 1 year.
