Post-swim spray for your skin and hair

Recently I shared a swimming tip on Instagram stories as the tip of the day. When we swim in chlorinated pools, the chlorine will seep into our body through our largest organ - the skin.

In our food chlorine plays a big part as salt - sodium chloride - which means that we need it in small amounts for our body to function properly. But just like with everything else, if we have too much of it, it can also start to cause harm.

Chlorine is absolutely necessary in public swimming pools to kill off bacteria that we bring into the water. Otherwise it would just be a huge pool of diseases. However, when a pool is very chlorinated, it can affect our health. The smell of chlorine enters our nasal passages and lungs, and can cause asthma like symptoms, as well as itchy eyes, fluid build up in the lungs, and eventually permanent lung damage.

When chlorine enters our body through the skin it can go anywhere and start to act as a toxin, rusting our insides slowly and letting them deteriorate - think your brain, arteries, other organs.

A simple tip I gave to undo the harm of chlorine is to take extra Vitamin C (1000mg both before and after swimming). This will neutralize the effects of chlorine. Simple! And with today's recipe you can even take it a step further. You can make a Vitamin C spray that can be sprayed on skin and hair. It neutralizes all the chlorine sitting on your skin, and it will seep into your body, so the Vitamin C bypasses digestion from a Vitamin C supplement. And a bonus is that it takes away the chlorine smell from your body after swimming. It's a huge win, and takes less than 5 minutes to whip up!

Preparation time: 2 minutes

Makes 1 60ml/ 2oz spray bottle:

  • 1/4 cup water

  • 1 tsp Sodium ascorbate (Vitamin C)

  • 4 drops lavender essential oil

  • 2 drops sandalwood essential oil

  • 60ml/ 2oz spray bottle (good quality plastic if you don't want to bring glass to the pool)

  1. Whisk together all the ingredients in a small bowl.

  2. Carefully pour the mixture into the spray bottle.

  3. Store in the refrigerate between swim sessions, and use up within one month.

Happy swim days!
