My first response to anything I eat in a restaurant and like is “How can I make this at home?” I am obsessed with recreating meals at home to make them even healthier and more nutritious. When it comes to skincare, I have a similar approach to buying groceries: if I can’t read the label and understand the ingredients, it’s probably not for me. A lot of the chemical additives in skin care, hair care, and make up products are just like additives in your food: they interrupt your metabolism, harm your internal balance, and can cause hormonal disruptions. This may sound a bit abstract, but basically breaks down to some of these symptoms:
irritated skin or breakouts (yes, that seems counterintuitive when you slather soothing body butter all over your limbs)
worsen PMS symptoms
make you feel lethargic
migraines and headaches
joint aches and pains
cause different kinds of cancer
While using a product like this once will unlikely do as little harm as eating a processed hot dog once, doing this over and over every day for the rest of your life will create an unhealthier you.
Most people are so concerned about eating clean, they never thing about how clean the rest of their lives are. I encourage you to look into hormone disruption and what this can cause in your body. I will be writing much more about this topic - one of my favorites - in the upcoming months.
For now, here is a gorgeous homemade body scrub that is so easy to make with a food processor right at home. I keep it in an air tight jar and it lasts for many weeks. While there may be body care products like shampoo, which are more difficult to replicate at home, body scrubs are very simple! They are great to strip the skin off dead skin cells, which can make your skin look dull, tired, and cause clogging of pores.
You have two options when making this body scrub: you can make the recipe exactly as listed here with the oil. I like to do this as it moisturizes while I scrub, and it’s quick and easy under the shower. If you are not a fan of the oily film (which does dry very quickly!), make the scrub without the oil. Just make sure to moisturize right after using the scrub to soothe your skin.
Preparation time: 5 minutes
For about 1 cup:
- 1 cup sugar
- ½ cup extra virgin olive oil or coconut oil
- ½ cup dried rose buds
- ½ cup dried calendula
- ½ cup dried lavender
- air tight storage container
Place the rose buds, calendula, and lavender in a food processor and process for 45 seconds - 1 minute. The mixture should be broken down and crumbly. You want the flower buds to be broken down. The finer they are, the better for your skin.
Add the sugar and oil, mix, and store in an air tight storage container. This keeps well for up to 3 months.
Bonus note: You can use the same scrub on your face! Just process the sugar and the flower buds together to make them finer. The skin on your face is more sensitive and needs smaller scrub particles.
