Digestive fennel smoothie

For most people, Mondays is the day to get back on a track after a weekend of perhaps letting go of some their “rules”. I always say it is absolutely fine to be a little flexible in your approach to food, especially when it comes to going out and socializing. I want to encourage my clients to make healthy choices whenever possible, however to never restrict food so much that it becomes a problem for them that binges happens. 

Once you are in tune with your body, you will find, though, that a lot of foods you may want to eat when going out will cause some kind of disruption in your system. After a night out, you may feel tired, sluggish, and exhausted the next morning. This often has to do with your digestion having had to go into overdrive for all the foods you usually don’t eat. An overly busy digestion is the one thing that sucks energy from us on a daily basis, if we don't take care of it. Starting the day just right, especially after such heavy nights, is so important. 

The first thing to do is to hydrate the morning after, especially if alcohol was involved. Try to drink at least 500ml/17oz of water before breakfast. Add some lemon or apple cider vinegar to this. Both are amazing at getting your digestion going. If you can, make sure the water is room temperature or slightly warmer. Cold water just shocks your digestive tract here. 

Afterwards, try this digestive smoothie. You need to plan ahead of time, since the fennel tea does take some time to brew. You can always make this before heading out for the night or when you come home and fall into bed. Just use 1 table spoon of fennel seeds and brew them in hot water (does not have to be boiling) overnight. The next morning the tea will be infused and cooled down, perfect in time to add to your smoothie. Just strain out the fennel seeds and the tea is ready to use. 

 

 

Preparation time: 5 minutes

Fennel soaking and cooling time: overnight (or about 2 hours) 

Makes 1 serving:

 

- 1 ½ cups leafy greens of your choice (spinach, kale, swiss chard, etc) 

- 1 cup fennel tea, cooled (1 Tbsp fennel seeds with hot water) 

- ½ cup cold water

- ⅓ cup oats

- 2 fresh figs

- 1 frozen banana

- 2 dates

 

Blend all ingredients in the blender for 1.5 minutes until the smoothie is creamy. Drink right away.
