Maca cacao green smoothie

May 15, 2018

If you have been following me on this blog or over on social media for a while, you know that I can't live without my green smoothies every morning. It's like my body is addicted to them. Even when I travel, I make sure that I can either find a cafe close by that can whip one up for me or that I can blend a simple one in my hotel room. The leafy greens give me so much energy for the day, the fiber keeps my digestion happy, and the vitamin and mineral bomb that hits me with every sip makes sure that my body is functioning well. It works so much better than coffee, because coffee also makes your stress hormones soar, gives you indigestion, and sucks out all your energy giving water out of you. If you haven't tried a green smoothie yet, I suggest you run into your kitchen and start blending. In fact, when I first met Arman, he used to pull up his nose every morning at my "swamp water". After a few weeks he asked if he could try it. It was love at first sip, and 7 years later he is as addicted as I am.

On the blog, in my ebooks, and in the cooking classes I have shared many different kinds of green smoothie recipes. Here are some of my favorite ones to get you started:

Today's green smoothie recipes combines my love for leafy greens with my love for superfoods powders. I often get asked how to use maca - a root from South America excellent at helping balance sex hormones (think fertility, missing or irregular periods, and mood swings). It is not very tasty by itself - a little sweet and bitter and stale tasting. However, when you combine it with my absolute top superfood raw cacao (think extremely delicious chocolate), then you got a match made in heaven. In fact, the "Surviving the Holidays" ebook has a maca macadamia smoothie with cacao to die for!

Anyways, today's smoothie is just one major nutrient bomb that tastes absolutely delicious. Give it a try, and I am sure you will happily sip your green smoothie every morning, too!

Just a quick note on coconut water: coconut water should ideally come from a fresh coconut, that you got down from your palm tree in your garden, opened up, and poured out :-). In Bangkok that was my life! Here I need to buy coconut water in a bottle. BUT there are huge quality differences. The reason coconut water is so amazing is because it has so many vitamins and minerals inside. They are all alive, and help you feel alive. Once the coconut water has been processed, heated, and filled into shelf stable containers, there is nothing good left in it. So make sure you buy fresh, organic, raw coconut water. It should be in the fridge and not pasteurized or heat treated in any way. If you can't find it, then don't worry, just replace the coconut water with regular water. It will still be super delicious!

Preparation time: 5 minutes

Makes 1 serving:

  • 1 banana

  • 1 cup spinach

  • 1 cup kale

  • 1 cup coconut water (see above) or regular cold water

  • 1 Tbsp almond butter

  • 1 Tbsp raw cacao powder

  • 1 tsp maca powder

  1. Throw everything in the bender, blend away, pour and sip. Make sure that the drink is completely blended, there shouldn't be any leafy bits floating around.

Enjoy!
