Healthy food spotting: Berlin

January 17, 2019

I have been wanting to go to this place forever! Veganz is the first vegan supermarket chain in Europe, and it started back in 2011 when it was not cool yet to be vegan :-). So on our month long Europe trip for Christmas I finally had the chance to be in Berlin for longer to actually make use of the things I wanted to buy at Veganz. And I did shop a litte, but honestly it was also a tad disappointing. I don't really know what I expected, but this was a relatively small place with a lot of prepared foods in packages - and they were all vegan. I guess what I am trying to say is that this is not really a health food store, but rather a vegan store with all of your vegan needs met such as vegan pizza, sausages, cookies, crackers, shampoos, books, and so much more. It's nice to know that if you come here you don't have to read the label of your wine or Christmas gingerbread for hidden animal products. I guess this place really speaks to the busy people, who want to be vegan for ethical reasons rather than health reasons, who have no time to prepare food, and so just come here to buy a ready made meal that they can pop in the microwave. What this is not is a balanced plate the way I would love to see a vegan place. Because let's face it, at the end of the day being vegan alone is not necessarily healthy; you can be a junk food vegan as well. That is why I like the word plant based rather than vegan, which emphasizes the fact that you eat plants, not altered soy and wheat products that somehow resemble a fish stick.

The selection of fresh produce is minuscule, but I do have to say there is a great bulk section for nuts, seeds, grains, and legumes, which is very difficult to find in most health food stores in Berlin. On top of that, the Veganz branded products, especially their kale chips, hemp bars, and energy balls are not only healthy (ingredients wise), but also very delicious with flavors such as blueberry vanilla hemp bar and strawberry bliss balls.

I would say it is definitely worth a visit if you are vegan or looking for plant based products (especially snacks) to ease yourself into a more plant based way of eating. Just don't expect to do your week's grocery shopping at Veganz, especially because there are so many other great health food stores in Berlin, such as Biocompany and Alnatura. And if you pass by other stores such as Spar, DM, and Edeka 24, you can even buy some of the Veganz branded products there.
